The University of North Texas LMAS Program mission is to create a student-centered, stimulating and innovative environment to advance and support the teaching, research and advocacy of LMAS knowledge at the University of North Texas. Courses will be taught by established professors with a record of research and teaching scholarship and community engagement in LMAS areas.

Goals of the LMAS academic program include providing students with an understanding of the implications of Latino and Mexican-America past, current, and future history and culture on regional communities and beyond. In addition, LMAS research goals include producing and promoting current salient theoretical and methodological ideas to enhance education, community development, and scholarship opportunities.

In support of its mission, the LMAS program has four objectives:

  • Development of a thematic concentration entitled: Latina/o and Mexican-American Studies (LMAS) within multidisciplinary University of North Texas Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Science Degrees in Integrative Studies. The degree program will enrich students' critical thinking and cultural understanding. This degree may incorporate classes from Texas Woman's University.
  • The recruitment, retention, and professional development of LMAS faculty at the University of North Texas.
  • A pipeline for K-16 students to study LMAS at the University of North Texas.
  • Development of partnerships among the University of North Texas, Texas Woman's University, departments, institutions and regions to promote community engagement and increase an awareness and knowledge of the Latina/o diaspora.
